Hair Health when Lightening
At Salem, your hair health is so important to us! There is no point having the colour of your dreams, but having so much breakage that it never looks nice - and if that is what you’re looking for, unfortunately we are not the salon for you.
We care so much about the health of your hair, that we offer not 1 but 2 bond building options with our lightening services, we have Keune’s Bond Fusion which is built into the pricing of all of our lightening services and the option to upgrade to the OG Olaplex which we offer for an additional $15.
We get asked a lot why we have two choices, and what the difference is, and why olaplex is worth an extra $15 - and we thought what better way to show you than push some test swatches to breaking point, and see which came out on top!
For each round we used Keune Ultimate Blonde with 20volume developer - mixed and processed to manufacturers instructions,
1. Contol - we will not be touching this one
2. Lightener mixed with Olaplex No.1, followed by Olaplex No.2 and then conditioner
3. Lightener mixed with Bond Fusion Phase 1, Followed by Bond Fusion phase 2
4. Lightener with no Bond Builder followed by a conditioning mask
PHOTO 1. shows our swatches as they started, uncoloured medium brown hair.
PHOTO 2. is after being lightened 2 times, you can see our #4 is already starting to show a bit of wear and tear, we’ve had a bit of breakage through the very ends, the texture has changed and it has not dried as smoothly. #2 and #3 are looking pretty similar at this stage
PHOTO 3. is after being lightened 4 times, you can now see #4 is looking pretty rough! We’ve had a lot of breakage throughout, and it is generally not looking or feeling happy at all. It has very poor elasticity (when we pull the hair it stretches and breaks rather than returning to its original shape). #3 has lost a bit of elasticity and is feeling a bit dry, but over all not terrible, #2 is starting to feel a bit dry too, but elasticity is still good and we have had no breakage
PHOTO 4. is after being lightened 6 times, and then left to dry naturally. We chose to let these dry naturally as #4 was mushy when wet, and literally falling apart when we touched it, if we’d blowdried it I don’t think there would be any hair left to show. You can see that once dry it is very sparse now, we’ve had a lot of breakage, the texture has completely changed and it feels like straw. #3 has had a bit of breakage too, has lost a lot of elasticity and is a bit fragile, although holds up when we pull it and is quite rough to the touch, although still softer than #4. #2 has lost some elasticity, we have had minimal breakage, but it is feeling very dry and a little rough to the touch, but much softer than both #3 and #4.
PHOTO 5. is after 6 rounds of lightening, air dried and then straightened using a ghd Platinum+.
#4 is about half has much hair as we started with, it is very sparse through the ends, it does feel a lot better straightened, due to the platinum+ smoothing the cuticle, although it does still break if we aren’t gentle - if this was your hair, we would recommend a big haircut, not to colour or lighten it at all, and you’d have to be super super careful if you wanted to blowdry or tie it up (and you’d probably want to sleep sitting up or you’d end up with broken hair all over your pillow!)
#3 with Bond Fusion has definitely still suffered after 6 rounds of lightening, we have a decent amount of breakage through the ends, although once straightened it is looking a lot better and feels a lot smoother - if this was your hair, we’d recommend a haircut, at home treatments and no more lightening except for new growth.
#4 with Olaplex is our clear winner! We’re not going to lie, this is still not ideal, and we would never choose to push your hair to this point as Salem, however of the 3 it is definitely the best. If this was your hair we would happily colour your new growth, we’d recommend using olaplex to help avoid anymore damage and repair exisiting damage, and if you were willing to do treatments at home, we would even consider future lightening on your ends for you!
We reserve the right to refuse service if your hair is already too damaged, or we believe lightening will damage your hair beyond repair. We obviously can’t guarantee any lightening services won’t result in damage, but we will always do our absolute best, and take as much care as possible to get you to your dream colour, without compromising your hair health!
