Allergic Reactions

Allergic Reactions are not fun to talk about, in fact they are something we hope we never have to talk about, but they are very real - so here we are, talking about them.

A proper allergic reaction is more than a little bit itchy, or a little bit uncomfortable, it can land you in hospital. They aren’t something to laugh at, and they are something we all need to take more seriously.

We recommend a patch test to test for reactions or sensitivities before all on scalp colours - these are complimentary and are carried out in salon 24-48 hours before your service, by applying a small amount of colour behind your ear and leaving it to see if any reaction occurs.

Foils, and colours that do not touch your scalp, should not create a reaction, however as we tone 99% of our blondes, we still recommend a patch test is carried out.

A few things that can add to the risk of an allergic reaction are scalp abrasions, other allergies, new tattoos, henna tattoos and even recently coloured brows or eyelashes. With the rise in cosmetic tattooing and henna brows, the threat is more real than ever - so please be wary. Some other things that can cause reactions when you’ve never had one before are new medications, changes in hormones, pregnancy, menopause and even because you ate fish once in 2009 and jupiter aligned with saturn in the 5th phase - really it can be for no reason at all, so it is always worth double checking!

We are not doctors, so we’re not going to give you any medical advice here, if you’ve had your hair coloured, and you’re having any unusual symptoms such as: stinging or burning sensation on the scalp, face, or neck, blisters or welts, itching or swelling of the scalp and face, swollen eyelids, lips, hands, or feet, an angry, red rash anywhere on the body or more severely, swelling of the throat and tongue, trouble breathing, fainting, nausea or vomiting we recommend you call Healthline or 111 immediately and seek medical attention.
