Keratin Smoothing Treatments
What is Keratin?
Keratin is a protein found naturally in skin, hair and nails, in addition to other sources. In human hair, it acts both as an external protective shield and an internal structural protein. Keratin is the first thing depleted when hair is damaged physically, chemically or from environmental factors such as the sun.
What does a Keratin treatment do?
When used in product formulations, keratin helps condition, strengthen, revitalize and repair damage. Keratin gives the hair shine, elasticity and a more youthful, healthy appearance. It makes unruly hair more manageable, helps seal split ends, protects from humidity, reduces drying and styling time, reduces frizz and fluff, and has the ability to reduce (not straighten) curls and waves depending on hair type and the type of treatment chosen.
At Salem we offer two different types of Keratin Treatments, we have our favourite Keratin Complex Express Blowout which lasts between 5 weeks and 3 months depending on hair type and home hair care, and the more permanent Kerasilk by Goldwell which lasts 5 months plus, with the ability to permanently alter the hair structure.
The Keratin Complex Blowout takes about an hour, the process involves having your hair washed, the keratin applied, blowdried in, straightened in and then let in for 8 hours, after which you can wash it and enjoy your amazing new hair! Why is it our favourite? The blowout can be applied directly after a colour, or at any other time, and is perfect for damaged blonde hair. The Blowout will help hair grow, as it is in a healthier, stronger condition, and colours will last longer. The keratin is bonded to the hair using heat, and slowly washes off over time.
We’re lucky enough to have some pretty awesome clients at Salem! One of our lovely ladies (who was slightly reluctant at first) was nice enough to provide us with this before and after of how the Blow Out completely changes the texture of her hair. Obviously the hair has also been coloured, but just ignore that part! In both photos she has allowed her hair to dry naturally. In the before photo you can see how frizzy and unruly the natural texture of her hair is, and afterwards how the hair sits smooth and the wiry texture is gone.
Here you have to ignore how terrible I am at taking selfies, but this is a pretty good example of what the blowout can do to naturally curly hair. Even in my before photos I have remnants of old keratin treatments in my hair so it’s not at full fro. First picture is drying naturally, second is blowdried before the treatment (without a brush), and third is blowdried after a keratin treatment (also without a brush. You can see its not straight but is definitely smooth and shiney!
The Goldwell Kerasilk treatment takes around about 2 hours, the process involves having your hair washed, blowdried, the keratin applied, processing for 15 minutes, blowdried again and straightened in, then washed, sealer applied and hair blowdried one final time. After the sealer is applied hair can be washed at any stage, and your new hair will last 5+ months. This keratin treament also includes glyoxylic acid and silk proteins to create new keratin bonds inside the hair shaft, stabilise the new shape and add softness and shine.
Nerissa has naturally thick curly hair that has a tendency to be quite dry.
This is a picture of her hair blowdried about 80% dry after our first shampoo in the treatment process, and then blowdried to almost dry after the sealer has been applied. In neither photo has conditioner been applied to her hair. You can see again the hair is not straight, but it is smooth, relaxed, shiney, frizz free and looks a lot healthier. We recommend having this process done 2 weeks before a colour as the process can slightly remove colour from the hair, in this case it has removed some of the tone from the ends of her hair (this can be toned on the day).
Michelle’s hair is very long, thick and wavy. This was the second time Michelle had the Kerasilk treatment done, after a keratin complex blowout of two, and following a straightening treatment done it thailand a few years ago, but as you can see the ends of her hair are still quite straight due to the old keratin and straightening treatments. The top left picture is before we washed it the first time, the bottom left is the texture after being blowdried prior to the treatment, and the two on the right side are after being blowdried (not straightened) after the sealer has been applied.
The results really speak for themselves here!
If you’re thinking about having a keratin treatment done, have a chat with myself or Kate next time you’re in the salon and we can help you choose which would be better for your hair.
